Therapy for Black individuals

A Yoruba word meaning the power to create that which you speak. The ability to make whatever one says happen. It is “the ability to bring one’s will into manifestation”, “so it will be”, or “it definitely shall be so!”

Asé (ah-shay):

Hey, I’m Dena!

Finding the right therapist can often seem like a never-ending journey.

The fit between you and your therapist matters.

You’re not just bringing in “a few issues.” You’re bringing all your shit—your thoughts, patterns, pain, and everything in between. You need someone who can sit with that, support you through it, cheer you on, and also gently call you out when your thinking is keeping you stuck.

My goal is for you to feel supported, understood, and not alone in any of it.

This page is specifically designed to help you get to know me and the space you’re coming to. Let’s not waste anymore time.

Black Washington marriage and family therapist

First of all, I am NOT your typical therapist.

I’m pretty relaxed, chill, and laid-back. I love to laugh and have a good time in sessions, but I’m also very serious about the work I do with clients.

I tend to sprinkle “fuck” and “shit” into my everyday vocabulary like little bits of colorful confetti. Feel free to join in on the fun.

I believe life is short and no one has time for beating around the bush. I don’t sugarcoat things, but I also won’t push you to take steps you’re not ready for. I will, however, challenge you to sit with uncomfortable feelings and new situations or thoughts.

I love working with people who want to do the work.

My ideal clients are aware that their therapy sessions are not equipped with a magic wand to instantly solve all their problems. They understand that change takes time and effort, and they are willing to put in the work even when it gets tough. They are committed to making positive changes in their lives because they know it is necessary for growth and healing.

Change takes time.

I can't do the work for you, but I will walk beside you every step of the way.

This work is important. YOU are important.

Remember, therapy is a confidential and judgment-free space where you can express yourself freely. Your well-being is my priority, and I am committed to providing you with the support and tools you need to thrive.

You deserve a space to be unapologeticallyyou.

I have 15 years of experience in the mental health and behavioral health field, including work in residential treatment, foster care, and day treatment settings for children and adolescents. These experiences have deepened my understanding of people and their challenges and strengthened my passion for this work.

I earned my second master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2023 and opened my part-time private practice in 2024—something I had long hoped to do before graduating. God allowed it to happen!

I am passionate about helping individuals and couples find meaningful solutions and look forward to supporting those I work with.
